Downes was the least of our problems yesterday. He did well against better players.

I find the digging out of Downes really fucking odd.

I don't like making excuses for players usually, but out of anyone, this lad has without doubt been treated like a cunt by this completely and utterly useless manager.

I have watched every single game this season, either at the OS or on telly, and most of our player have been absolutely fucking gash in most games. Soucek has produced the worst collection of games I've seen a player have since Kovac, an abomination of a season.

Downes played in the early European games, and was MOTM in every one he started. He has only been started in a few league games, each one away to a top 6 side from memory, and as every person alive knows, our manager throws those games.

What do some people think will happen in those games to someone playing his role? Under Moyes, those games are a hiding to nothing for our players, we have ZERO forward momentum, and people think a defensive midfielder is going to be dominating the midfield and playing defence splitting passes? You fucking clowns.

He's no world beater, but he's a decent player, who is fucking worlds better than Soucek, and we'd have done a lot better in many more games if Downes started ahead of that useless streak of piss, who can't even pass sideways, let alone forward.

I thought Downes played well last night and wish we had used him for the last dozen games instead of Soucek so he could have gotten a bit of experience around a decent player. I feel he could come in and do the Rice job, not as good obviously, but with a bit of time feel he could really step up and be a semi decent replacement

It’s not TOO tired, it’s more tired than the opposition that’s the problem. The players can always go out there and play to the best of their ability, but they are going to struggle with 8 games in 3weeks in the legs vs players who have played 4 in three weeks. Palace was the classic example. Our energy levels were shit because the players are fatigued and they walked all over us. The more they play the less the level they can play to and it’s only a matter of time before it all falls down or they all start getting injuries- which we are already seeing.

You can’t sustain what he’s asking them to do. You don’t send knackered soldiers into battle against fresh ones because they’ll get slaughtered. Same applies here.

Sure he can keep wheeling them out but they’ll just keep losing, playing worse and worse, annd getting injured until they have some adequate recovery time.

Moyes made to look a right cunt with his "Blend them in " bull shit to get a 3-0 away at and in form City was proof he should have been using his squad

Possession STATS were awful again last night.

We won't ever deserve to win any games with 30% possession.

Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread - Preview
Does anyone think having soucek, Aguerd and rice in the team would have changed the result?

In fact, with them in the team we have always conceded in the first half.

So on balance, we survived 45 minutes without our two first choice midfielders and the 1st choice defender against the best club side in the world on form.

I think there are positives to take from that. Also we have to question why our 1st choice spine of the team performs so badly most games this season. And should we stick to what actually was a successful 1st half performance for the remainder of the season?

We have to stop respecting “names” and put players in that work properly for us. I would have zero problem starting Downes instead of soucek for the rest of the season for instance.

Also, that left side Emerson and creswell thing meant that they didn’t get anything from that side at all. Which is pretty amazing really. Similar to creswell/ Masuaku before he Arthur got injured. Two left backs covering that flank is defensively sound. Plus Emerson can get forward and creswell can deliver the ball well.

I think there are positives to take from this game considering how bad our form generally is.

I was disappointed that Downes didn’t shine last night but Sir Alf is right. I start against Citeh is hardly the metric for judgement.

If Soucek hadn’t had so many poor games lately none of us would bother about how an occasional reserve does. We mostly suspect there’s a player in there that is being held back but so many players are in that position under Moyes’s management.

Best get shot of the manager asap…

There are some really shit teams at the bottom of the league but all of them have more ambition than West Ham under Moyes. Even at home we surrender possession to the shittiest of teams. Would anybody be surprised if we get relegated?

Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread - Preview
Antonio had a great 1st half
looks fit ,up for it again and looked disappointed on being taken off so he should be as he was our only chance to get a goal.

All this to tried stuff is rubbish and shouldn't be used by fans or management - Jesus if they cant play 2 games a week without getting tried sod off to another league.

Downes might add to his game, might not. One thing for sure is that he won't under current circumstances. Get a manager with more than 1 game plan in who actually coaches players, then it's time to assess.

Russ - Don't be silly, I'm hardly going to judge him just on last night am I. I'm hardly the only one that doesn't rate him either, as I have explained he doesn't seem to have anything in his locker at this level going forward, and that isn't good enough these days. If you think that will improve after a run of games and/or a new manager, fine. Let's see.

Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread - Preview
I agree bit early to write him off. But last night I thought he was really poor. Was a great chance to stake a claim for Soucek's shirt and don't think he got close unfortunately.

Maybe its confidence and minutes as to why, which is on Moyes..... I hope so anyway as I like the lad.... he just doesnt impose himself in the prem games at all which isn't good enough for where we want to go

Downes hasn't had a proper run in the team and gets thrown in against Man City and you pick him apart. I think that's unfair.

He's not going to improve at PL level if he doesn't play.

He does the basics very well and is a safe option. Confidence and good coaching will make him alot better and he will then start bringing more to the table.

I think it’s too soon to write off Downes, he hasn’t had enough of a run in the team and does he have the right manager directing him

Sir Alf 11:41 Thu May 4
Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread - Preview
I agree he is just recycling the ball and playing the simple ball, not risking turning or beating a player and not attempting any longer passes forward etc so in that sense, and if it were to continue after a run of games, yes limitations.

But I still think he is better than Soucek in the team in this limited form because he does show the speed to keep pace with opposing midfielders and rarely gives it away or gets dispossessed. He will get at least double the touches and not be a walking liability :-)

Also he needs to be given the chance to improve imo. Paqueta was written off as a useless waste of a lot of money but last 5- 10 games is beginning to be one of our better players.

Downes, Kehrer Areola etc need more minutes before being conclusive imo. Even Emerson looks decent going forward now and has improved in that sense

How many PL games has he started?
I'd like to see a run of starts .... after not starting for weeks I'd be reluctant to judge any midfielder thrown in against Man City without Rice with him.

Of course on Sunday Soucek will be back trailing around 10yds off Fernandes all night

Manuel 11:16 Thu May 4
Re: ⚽ Man City v West Ham - Official Match Thread - Preview
The game has moved on now since the Makelele days as a water carrier, you need more about your game now to prosper and be an asset in the PL. Look at other sides DM's. they can play a bit too. Are we really saying we will be happy with a player who can literally only pass the ball sideways and backwards? Not for me. Downes isn't good enough at this level. Am I writing him off? Yes, I am. Feel free to disagree though.
